A perfect girl in an imperfect society

Jaigaon, April 24: If it?s Pretty Woman for Hollywood, it?s The Perfect Girl for Bhutan.

Producer-actor Tshering Gyeltsen, through his new film, The Perfect Girl, aims to highlight the plights the educated but unemployed youths of the hilly region.

Currently shooting in Phuentsholing, across the border near here, Tshering told The Telegraph that the film, though centres around a tale of love, will try to bring to the fore the predicaments of the Bhutanese young generation.

?Many young people do not get any job even after passing out of colleges. They try to earn by hook or by crook and most often the girls are pushed into prostitution. We must do something about it,? Gyeltsen said.

?The film focuses on how some girls often cannot overcome the lure of easy money and forsake their honour to take up prostitution. We also try to show how these misguided girls can be brought back to the mainstream,? director Pelden Dorji said.

The story revolves around a young graduate from a very poor family, played by debutante actor Sonam Chhuki, the director said. The girl leaves her village and comes to Thimphu looking for job. ?But instead of a decent job, all she gets are indecent proposals. She leaves Thimphu and goes to Phuentsholing, but even there she is disillusioned,? Dorji said.

No job, but she needs money to support her family. She has to give in to the circumstance and takes up prostitution at a hotel. There she meets a journalist from Thimphu, who falls in love with her. ?The hero insists that she give up her way of life. He takes her back to her village where he manages to get her the job of a schoolteacher. But our heroine is not to be let off so easily. Her parents oppose her relation with the journalist, leaving her to choose between her love and her filial ties,? Dorji said.

Gyeltsen?s fourth venture as a producer-actor, the film is set to debut on June 5 at Lugar Hall in Thimphu. ?It took Rs 25 lakh to make the two-and-a-half-hour movie. It has been shot in Phuentsholing, Thimphu and Bumthang,? he said.
