Box-office Curves

Lucky is how Salman Khan must be feeling. At least his lone release last week got a fair opening. That?s more than can be said about the releases that poured in this week. All four were given a thanda treatment, some more than the rest. RIP. Lucky got a terrific opening. But the slump set in after the weekend. And from what I hear, the makers are planning to re-edit the film. I also hear there were two separate endings shot for the film, one on the airport in Russia and the other in Mumbai. The co-directors opted for the former, though concluding the romance in Mumbai made a lot more sense.

Manisha Koirala is looking better than she ever did. See her in her new release, Mumbai Express. Manisha is looking like a million bucks. And she?s able to bring a sense of conviction to anything she tries her hand at. The time is right for someone to pull her career out of the morass. Manisha couldn?t fall any lower than her second-to-last release, Chahat ? Ek Nasha. Now if nothing else, Mumbai Express must be credited with rejuvenating Manisha?s career.

Akshay Kumar is currently in Mauritius shooting for the Priyadarshan comedy, Garam Masala. But he?ll be back in time for the premiere of Waqt: Race Against Time, special because the actor turns distributor in Mumbai, despite always claiming he would never get into the business side of filmmaking. ?Yes,? he concedes. ?But sooner or later I had to take the plunge. And I?d rather do so with a film that I believe in. Waqt is a film I cry watching every time. Hopefully, its box-office performance will make me laugh,? he chuckles.
