Agartala, April 19: The ONGC is all set to give President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam?s brainchild, Providing Urban (Amenities in) Rural Areas (PURA), concrete shape in Tripura.
The oil major will adopt five panchayats located around its 750 MW power project site at Palatana in Udaipur for providing urban amenities. On April 14, an ONGC delegation headed by chairman Subir Kumar Raha, met the President and apprised him of the initiative.
Chief minister Manik Sarkar, power minister Manik Dey and finance minister Badal Chowdhury were present at the inauguration of the project in Udaipur subdivision of South Tripura.
?Initially we will equip the panchayats with facilities of learning computers and Internet, running generators during power-cuts as well as community centres and public libraries. We also aim at providing electricity to places still uncovered by electric supply,? said Raha. The facilities will be provided to Maicherra, Purba Kalabaria, Pashchim Kalabaria, Ratanpur and Sonaicherri panchayats.
The ONGC chairman said other facilities like healthcare, sanitation, roads and education would be also provided in a phased manner.
The ONGC?s mega power project in Palatana area would be implemented by a new company under the banner of ONGC Tripura Power Project,? Raha said. ?We will have a share of 26 per cent while 24 per cent will be with the state government. For the rest, equities will be floated in the market,? he added.
