Teching to the south

Established in 1951, the PSG College of Technology is one of the many educational institutions managed by PSG & Sons Charities Trust. It is government-aided, autonomous, ISO 9001- certified and is affiliated to Anna University.

The college today has a student strength of about 5,200 with 11 engineering and technology departments, besides computer applications, management sciences, basic sciences and humanities. Eighteen undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offered by the college were accredited in 1997 by the National Board of Accreditation of the All India Council For Technical Education (AICTE).

The recipient of several prestigious projects and international funding support ? with over 15 visiting faculty members and more than 150 research scholars ? the college was conferred ?autonomous status? by the University of Madras in 1978-79, which was continued by the Bharathiar University and subsequently by Anna University. The college is empowered to administer its own evaluation system.

PSG college has also signed a MoU with research organisations and industries in order to promote closer interaction with other institutions in the areas of technology development, training of students, curriculum updating and development of state-of-the-art centres.

The college offers 48 full-time and part-time programmes in science, engineering and management at UG and PG levels. The biotechnology department offers a four-year BTech degree, approved by the AICTE.

In Tamil Nadu, admission to courses in engineering, medicine, agriculture, veterinary and animal sciences in government, government-aided and private colleges is granted through the Tamil Nadu Professional Courses Entrance Examination (TNPCEE).

Anna University, Chennai, conducts the TNPCEE in April. The exam notification is published in newspapers in February; this is followed by sale and receipt of applications.

Postal applications should be sent to The Secretary, TNPCEE, Anna University, Chennai-600 025 by March. For more details, you can also write to PSG College of Technology, Post Box No. 1611, Peelamedu, Coimbatore-641 004, TN, or visit their website www.psgtech.edu.

Eligibility: Candidates who have passed the Plus Two or qualifying examination are eligible to apply.

Those who will be appearing in the Plus Two or qualifying examination in the year of the TNPCEE exam are also eligible. The minimum marks to be secured in the Plus Two examination for admission to BTech Courses in Tamil Nadu is 60 per cent overall with physics, chemistry and mathematics as subjects.

Candidates belonging to other states who are seeking admission against the seats reserved for other- state candidates in Anna University or payment seats in private (self-financing) engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu must also appear in the TNPCEE exam.

Other-state candidates are not permitted to take up professional courses offered by the Directorate of Medical Education, Office of the Director of Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. Those exempted from this condition are candidates applying under the special category quota ? children of Tamil Nadu origin settled in Andaman & Nicobar.

Entrance exam

The exam is held in April in 40 cities across Tamil Nadu. Results are published in May and subsequently counselling for students is conducted in June/July.

Pattern of exam

Engineering candidates have to appear for two papers. Selection to the professional courses is based on the marks secured in the relevant subjects, that is, physics, chemistry and mathematics, in the qualifying examination (Plus Two or equivalent) and in the TNPCEE exam with a weightage of 200:100.

How to prepare

Revise all important concepts and formulae. Give all three subjects equal time and concentrate on one question at a time. Identify the mistakes you are making, and become familiar with the correct approach.

To prepare for physics, you could study from books by Krishna, Lodiwala and N.N. Ghosh. For chemistry, you could prepare from books by Ratan, Krishna, Arihant and Dinesh publications.

For math, you could practise from books by R.D. Sharma, Jai Prakash Narain, and Tata McGraw Publishers.

If E represents the peak value of the voltage in an AC circuit, the r.m.s. value of voltage will be:
a) E/p b) E/Öp c) E/2
d) E/Ö2

Two bodies of different masses ma and mb are dropped from different heights a and b . The ratio of time taken by them to reach the ground is:
a) Öa:Öb b) a:b c) 1/a:1/b d) ma:mb

A disc of mass m is lying on a horizontal table. A stiff vertical spring is attached to it. A disc of negligible mass is connected to the free end of the spring. The minimum force that should be applied to the upper disc to press the spring such that the lower disc is lifted off the table when the external force is suddenly removed is:
a) mg b) mg2 c) mg3 d) 3 mg
