United drive for social rights

Ranchi, April 18: Various social organisations of the state have come on a common platform of right to food and work campaign.

The organisations conducted a strategy-planning meeting here today. The campaign will also press for enactment of Employement Guarantee Scheme (EGS) as said by the national advisory council.

The right to food and work campaign will conduct a three-day national level convention starting June 16 to create awareness among the masses about the fundamental right to work.

?More than 20 organisations have already submitted their consent to participate in the convention. Trade unions, women?s organisations, non-government and students? organisations will also participate,? said Balram, a member of the campaign.

The EGS provides guarentee of employment to all those who are willing to provide physical labour accepting minimum wages.

The scheme is applicable to any adult citizen of the country who is ready to work and will get employment within the next 15 days.

This Act provides a legal provision for basic employment opportunity, said Jean Dreze member of national advisory council and professor of Delhi School of Economics.

?There had been many changes made in the EGS laws presented in the Parliament which have changed its fundamental structure. The campaign will also organise a nationwide right to work rally to create awareness among the masses,? said Dreze.

The campaign is to press the government to initiate food related schemes, he said.
