Defiance greets CM quit whip

Ranchi, April 18: Chief minister Arjun Munda might have plans to get resignation letters from the heads of the state boards and corporations tomorrow, but BJP strongman Shailendra Mahto is in no mood to oblige.

The chairman of Ranchi Regional Development Authority (RRDA) today said he would defy the whip ?irrespective of consequences.?

Talking to The Telegraph, Mahto said he had been appointed for a three-year term and he had no intentions of putting in his papers before time.

He added that he had not received any message from Munda asking him to quit either.

?Why should I quit? Before I took over, Munda had sounded me out. I had told him that I should be appointed for not less than three years. The CM had agreed and I joined as RRDA chief on January 18,? Mahto stressed.

The RRDA chief pointed out that soon after he assumed charge, the state government had even filed an affidavit before Jharkhand High Court, informing it of the appointment.

?A PIL had been filed before the high court asking for the appointment of a chairman to RRDA. The petitioner had pointed out that after the resignation of the previous chairman, the post had remained vacant for quite some time as a result of which many building plans were getting delayed,? he revealed.

The court then ordered the government to appoint a suitable person as chairman. Though the government pointed out that the model code of conduct was in force, the court had ordered it to go ahead with theappointment anyway.

?If the CM still insists on my resignation, it will be deemed as playing truant with the law,? Mahto said.

Mahto is not the only person holding out against the pressure.

TVNL chairman Ram Tahal Choudhury, who had initially said he was in no mood to put in his papers, said he had been assured of another term by the chief minister.

?I have been told by the chief minister that it is a legal obligation to reconstitute all the boards and corporations after his new government was sworn in on March 12. I have also been assured by that I will be renominated as TVNL chairman. This has forced me to reconsider my earlier stand not to quit,? Choudhury said.

There is, however, a rider for Munda. ?If Munda does not keep his promise, I will be free to expose him. I am also determined not to accept any other assignment in any other board or corporation other than TVNL,? he said.
