Death sparks CPM fury

Calcutta, April 3: Pashupati Manna, 62, a retired schoolteacher and member of the CPM zonal committee at Namkhana in South 24-Parganas, was found dead this afternoon on the bank of the Muriganga.

As the news of the murder spread, CPM supporters attacked houses of Trinamul Congress supporters and set fire to at least six of them. Police were also attacked. Six personnel were injured and reinforcements had to be sent from Kakdwip and Diamond Harbour. The special combat force was also called in from Alipore.

Manna, last seen attending a party meeting last night, did not return home after that.
