Elegant movements

Kathakata is the origin of Kathak dance. The format of choreography based on a story-telling manner is the triumph card of the production Ganesh presented by Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre and Department of Information and Culture, Government of West Bengal at Rabindra Sadan on March 30. The students of Pandit Sambhu Maharaj Kathak Academy and the Dhwani repertory group, both from New Delhi, staged this theatrical extravaganza using hilarious dialogues to delve into the myths behind the birth of the elephant-headed god.

Bhaswati Mishra, a brilliant Kathak dancer of Lucknow gharana, choreographed the piece with a clutch of young talents ? all around six years of age. The variety of compositions and elegant movements spoke of a systematic thought process. Begun with a brief Vighna vinasha vinayaka stotra followed by small group compositions, the entire presentation was colourful and spontaneous. Dressed in red and gold, the dancers were well-synchronised. The senior students displayed good command over authentic Lucknow gharana infusing a thrilling speed with joy. Excellent lighting by Milind Kumar and good musical balance by Chandrachur Bhattacharya and Shanti Sharma need special mention.
