Elephant kills farmer

Purulia, March 26: A 42-year-old farmer was trampled to death by an elephant in Nunia village under Arsha police station, 310 km from Calcutta, last night.

Around 600 people took Bauri Mahato?s body to a local health centre this morning and held a demonstration.

Police and forest officials reached the spot with their teams and the agitation was called off after five hours.

Mahato?s body has been sent for post-mortem.

Villagers have complained that the elephant has killed four persons in the last year, striking terror in the area, police said.
