1.4 lakh stolen from store
A cooperative store on CR Avenue was burgled on Tuesday night and Rs 1.4 lakh was stolen from a locker. The theft was discovered around 10.30 am on Wednesday. Police suspect an insider was involved in the crime. No one has been arrested.
Officiating governor
Bihar Governor Buta Singh will be sworn in as governor of West Bengal on March 25 at Raj Bhavan. He will officiate in the absence of Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who is going on a month?s leave.
Youth suicide
Raju Haldar, 21, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of a cowshed near his house in Bikiakhola, Howrah, on Tuesday night. Local residents suspect the suicide was a fallout of a family dispute. An unnatural death case has been registered.
Body found
The body of a 30-year-old man was found in Bichalighat, Garden Reach, early on Wednesday. The body had bullet injuries.
Jute mill fire
A fire broke out at Delta Jute Mill, in Sankrail, on Wednesday evening. Firemen reached the spot around 5.30 pm and were trying to control the blaze till reports came in. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained.
Theft arrest
Pannalal Jaiswal, 40, was arrested in Dasnagar, Howrah, on Tuesday in connection with the theft of aluminium wire from a state electricity board office. Police said wire worth Rs. 1.2 lakh was recovered from Jaiswal.
Student polls
The election for office-bearers of the Presidency College Students? Union was held on Wednesday. All 38 representatives of the Independents? Consolidation-led alliance were present, while two of the 31 SFI representatives did not turn up.
Township parks
Salt Lake councillors, at a meeting presided over by chairman Dilip Gupta on Wednesday, formed a seven-member panel to report on the 50-odd parks in the township. The report will be submitted within seven days. The councillors also decided to increase by 10 per cent the tender amount for collecting parking fees.
