Puja debut for Chitpur terminal

The Chitpur railway terminal will be operational from the Pujas, Eastern Railway general manager Shyam Kumar said on Monday. Initially, five Delhi and North Bengal-bound trains will be run from there. The terminal will function with three platforms in the first phase. By 2006, three more platforms will be commissioned.

Kidnap accused

Mukesh Singh, an accused in the Roma Jhawar abduction case, was produced in the Salt Lake SDJM court on Monday for fingerprint tests. The court granted Mukesh's prayer to make a confession on March 16.

Road mishap

Shibani Dasgupta, 55, was injured when a car hit her at the JL Nehru Road-Lindsay Street crossing on Monday morning. Dasgupta, a resident of Regent Park, was admitted to SSKM Hospital.

Actor relatives

Relatives of actor Soumitra Chatterjee will be questioned in connection with the theft at his Golf Green home, police said on Monday.

Dilip associates

Two associates of murder accused hatkata Dilip were arrested in Madhyamgram on Sunday night. Kamal Das and Subhash Mandal have been remanded in police custody for six days.

VAT protest

The Federation of West Bengal Trade Association will launch a series of agitations to protest the imposition of value-added tax. Federation chairman M. Singhania said traders would sit in a hunger strike near Metro cinema on March 17. A 72-hour trade bandh has been called from March 30.

Expressway

Sodepur Road was cleared of encroachers on Monday to ensure that the second phase of Kalyani Expressway is inaugurated by the chief minister on Wednesday.

Blast injury

Four persons were injured when a bomb exploded in a four-storeyed building on Lenin Sarani on Monday morning.

Knocked down

A 25-year-old motorcyclist, Madhu Thapa, was injured when a private bus on route 80A knocked him down near JK Island, off Fort William's main gate, on Monday afternoon. Thapa, a resident of Sudhir Bose Road, was admitted to SSKM Hospital.
