Governor blames it on rumours

Jamshedpur, March 4: Governor Syed Sibtey Razi today denied that the BJP ever produced 41 legislators before him for a head-count.

?They have not produced the required number of MLAs to prove their majority before me after the Assembly poll results were announced. The rumours that BJP had produced 41 MLAs before me is nothing but a misinformation campaign,? said the governor during a live interview to at least two television channels this evening.

Razi justified his decision of asking JMM chief Shibu Soren to form the government, saying he had acted within the constitutional framework.

?The decision to invite Shibu Soren to take oath as the chief minister of the state was taken keeping in mind the constitutional framework. I have done nothing wrong and there was no pressure from New Delhi,? said Razi.

On his decision to shorten the period for chief minister Soren to prove his majority in the House, Razi denied that there was any pressure on him from the President.

?I have taken the decision to invite Soren to prove his majority sooner than decided earlier following media reports about the horse-trading of Independent MLAs. There are also reports that at least two MLAs have been kidnapped by some political party. To prevent all this I have decided to invite Soren to prove his majority sooner,? Razi said.

Razi also denied reports that he was summoned by the President on his decision to invite Soren to form the government. ?All this is a part of a misinformation campaign. It was a fractured mandate in Jharkhand, therefore I felt that I should inform the President on the happenings in the state,? he said.

Razi said the date of calling Soren to prove his majority would be decided after his arrival in the state capital tomorrow.

Earlier, the governor had fixed March 21 for Soren to prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly.

Asked whether there was pressure from either Prime Minister Manmohan Singh or Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Rai categorically denied even taking their names in the ?murky situations?.

Questioned as to whether he was thinking of tendering his resignation after the chaotic situation, Razi said, ?There is no question of my resignation on the issue of inviting Shibu Soren to form the next government in the state. I have not done anything wrong or out of the constitutional framework,? added Razi.

On questions that the governor had called up Delhi thrice before asking Soren to form the government, Razi said that the calls were nothing to do with the present political situation in the state.
