Coal yard hearing adjourned

The case relating to the shifting of coal yards from Chitpur to Dankuni came up before Justice P.C. Ghosh of Calcutta High Court on Tuesday. The hearing has been adjourned till next Thursday. The Calcutta Coal Plot-Holders Association had challenged the Eastern Railway (ER)?s decision to shift the yards from Chitpur to Dankuni. The ER?s move followed the government?s decision to set up a terminal station in Chitpur. The last budget had allocated a sum of Rs 120 crore for the purpose. ustice Ghosh had passed an order directing all concerned to maintain status quo. he railways later approached the acting chief justice (CJ) for immediate hearing of the case. The acting CJ had again assigned the matter to Justice P.C. Ghosh.

Break-in at MLA?s house

A youth scaled the walls to enter the Alipore residence of Satyanarayan Bajaj, MLA from Burrabazar, late on Monday. Bajaj claimed he was asleep when a youth, clad in a pair of shorts and a vest, entered the bedroom of his residence on Raja Santosh Road. The nurse on night duty raised an alarm. Bajaj?s wife Raj Kumari Devi tried to stop the intruder, but he managed to flee. Police are on the case.

Metro service

Metro Railway carried 3,611,853 commuters during the 12-day Calcutta Book Fair, earning Rs 18,128,732. Ninety-eight additional trains ran on the last two days of the fair.

Campus protest

Classes were disrupted at Rajabazar Science College on Tuesday as more than 100 students held a demonstration on campus. They were protesting the authorities? decision to set up a museum in a portion of a building where a conference hall was supposed to come up for hosting campus interviews.

Workshop

A one-day workshop on child protection was organised by the Childline India Foundation in Diamond Harbour, South 24-Parganas, on Tuesday. Academics, social activists and policemen came together to share their experiences as well as grouses against each other. Ways to protect destitute children, especially girl children, were discussed.

Road deaths

Two persons were killed in separate accidents on Tuesday evening. A private bus knocked down Murteja Rehman (48) on Watgunge Street around 6 pm. He was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Mahadeb Datta (50) was hit by a minibus at Mahabirtala, New Alipore, around 7 pm. He was taken to MR Bangur Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Fraud remand

The Alipore sub-divisional judicial magistrate on Tuesday remanded Mriganka Shekhar Guria in police custody for seven days. Guria was arrested in Midnapore on Monday for siphoning off more than Rs 10 crore from a chit fund. Guria is a resident of Mahestala.

Warring actors

Actors Rudranil Ghosh and Oindrilla Chakraborty, engaged in a legal battle, met each other in a courtroom on Tuesday in compliance with a high court order. he actors, accompanied by their lawyers and family members, discussed for an hour how to resolve their dispute. The two will meet again on Thursday. Oindrilla had alleged that Ghosh had cheated her with false assurances of marriage.

Power alert

Power supply may be disrupted in the Madurdaha and Hossainpur areas, off the EM Bypass, between 10 am and 4.30 pm on February 10, 17 and 24. CESC will carry out maintenance work to strengthen the distribution network in the region.
