Souvik falls early

Panvel (Maharashtra): Rising Maharashtra player Aniket Koparkar edged out Bengal?s Souvik Basu Roy 4-3 to enter the men?s singles second round in the 66th senior national table tennis championships here Saturday.

Koparkar came back from the dead to move past his Bengal opponent 7-11, 11-9, 11-6, 9-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-6 and earned a meeting with Jayanta Chandra of Andhra Pradesh, seeded 11th, for a place in the pre-quarter finals of the Reliance Industries-sponsored championships in Lodhivali.

Joining Koparkar in the last 16 of the men?s singles were 13th seed Jignesh Jaiswal of Gujarat, 14th seed Amit Das of RSPB, Das? teammate and 15th seed Prithvir J. Bose and 16th seed Anal Kashyap of Assam.

N.R. Indu and Mantu Ghosh defeated their PSPB teammates Poulami Ghatak and Mouma Das 5-11, 11-7, 11-9, 6-11, 11-6 to win the women?s doubles title.

In women?s singles, last year?s pre-quarter finalists Shalmali Mhatre of Maharashtra and Sayantika Kundu of Bengal moved into the second round with identical 4-1 victories over Tamil Nadu?s S. Nivedita and Gujarat?s Sapna Sharma, respectively.
