Adhir row

Behrampore, Jan. 22: Defence minister Pranab Mukherjee met Adhir Chowdhury at the circuit house to urge him to withdraw his resignation as Murshidabad Congress chief.

The MP has said he would decide by tomorrow.

Mukherjee told reporters after the meeting. Chowdhury had resigned on Tuesday holding some Congress leaders responsible for the dissent, reports our correspondent.

growing dissension within the organisation. He voiced his protest on this score while addressing a party workers' rally in Calcutta on January 11, addressed by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

'Adhir takes time to let us know his decision by tomorrow when I requested him to withdraw his resignation. I will be able to give you a clear picture on this score by tomorrow,' Mukherjee told news persons tonight , waiting at the circuit house.

He said a PCC team will visit the district to probe the allegations against 10 party commissioners, owing allegiance to Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Atish Sinha, for moving a no-confidence in the municipality chairman, Nilratan Auddy.

'I condemn in strong words the manner in which some commissioner had moved an abortive no-confidence in the chairman from our own party. Such a gesture is thinkable from our own party men when the Congress had won all 23 wards and the Opposition CPM was no where. This is a shame on us', he observed.
