Man sells wife

Krishnagar, Jan. 17: A debt-ridden man allegedly sold his 18-year-old wife to a resident of Kharagpur in West Midnapore. Police said Amal Das, a resident of Taldaha village in Krishnagunj police station area, 110 km from Calcutta, was absconding after his wife filed a complaint.

Das, a rickshaw-puller, allegedly tortured his wife for money. Three months ago, he left her with a friend in Kharagpur giving false assurances of a job. The woman was sexually harassed until neighbours rescued her.

Krishnagar: Nearly 100 students of Shantipur College, 70 km from Calcutta, demonstrated in front of the institution and blocked entry and exit points for more than three hours to protest against irregular classes.

Rape bid

Behrampore: An advocate of the Jangipur subdivisional court was sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment on Monday for trying to rape a six-year-old girl. Das, 35, had tried to rape the girl in Aurangabad village in Suti area of Murshidabad, 275 km from Calcutta.

Panja return

Calcutta: Ranjit Panja, a former Trinamul Congress MP from Barasat said he had called on defence minister and state Congress president Pranab Mukherjee at his residence last night to discuss ?my possible return? to the Congress.

Maoist talks

Midnapore: CPI state secretary Manju Kumar Majumdar today said the government should initiate a dialogue with CPI(Maoist) members, now active in West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura districts.
