50 sergeant posts to be abolished

The state cabinet on Tuesday cleared a proposal to abolish 50 sergeant posts in the city police. Thirty-five of them will be redesignated sub-inspectors and the rest will be given other responsibilities. fficials said the 35 sergeants, once they become sub-inspectors, will have the power to investigate crime. ?Traffic sergeants don?t have investigating authority. The changes are being made to strengthen traffic policing,? an official said at Writers? Buildings. ive assistant commissioners will be recruited to monitor the sub-inspectors, he added.

House help suicide

A domestic help, in his mid-40s, committed suicide on Tuesday morning by hanging himself at his employer?s residence, in Munchipara. The body of Dipak Bhuniya was first seen by the employer, Kishori Mohan, around 6.30 am. Police said after preliminary investigation that Bhuniya, a resident of Falta (South 24-Parganas), had been suffering from depression.

State relief

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will hand over a cheque worth Rs 3.5 crore for tsunami relief to the Prime Minister at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday.

Heritage fest

National Heritage Festival (Expo-2005) will be inaugurated by cottage and small scale industries minister Bansagopal Chaudhury at Swabhumi, 5 pm, on Wednesday. Municipal affairs minister Asok Bhattacharya and mayor Subrata Mukherjee will attend the function.

Award function

The Ladies Study Group will hold its annual award function on Wednesday. Union commerce and industry minister Kamal Nath will distribute the awards. The minister will also engage in a conversation with industrialist Harsh Neotia on India in the World ? The World in India.

Dacoity

Five persons were seriously injured when armed dacoits raided a house in Rahara, Barrackpore, early on Tuesday. Police said the dacoits, armed with revolvers and choppers, stormed the house of Gouranga Dutta around 3 am. The five injured, all tenants of the house, tried to resist the dacoits while they were fleeing with the loot ? gold ornaments and cash, worth Rs 70,000. No one has been arrested.

Handloom fair

The National Handloom Expo, 2005 ? an exhibition of handloom fabrics from across the country ? will be held on the Maidan from January 17 to February 6. Over 50 marketing organisations from 19 states, including weavers? cooperatives, will put up stalls at the fair. This year?s theme is ?Diversification of Handloom Fabrics of the Eastern Region?.

Road death

A 40-year-old unidentified woman was killed on Tuesday morning when a Matador knocked her down on Tarachand Dutta Street. According to police, the mishap occurred around 3.30 pm when the woman was crossing the road. Local residents took her to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead. The driver of the killer vehicle has been arrested.

Extra coach

The Howrah-Dhanbad Coalfield Express will have an additional chair-car coach. An Eastern Railway official said on Tuesday that the second-class chair-car coach would be attached to the Up train from January 12. The Down train will have the extra coach from January 13.
