Sleaze racket at computer centre

The owner of a computer training school, on Ekbalpore Road, was arrested on Friday on charges of running a pornography racket on the premises. Peeyush Pandey, deputy commissioner of police (detective department-I), said the owner of Sree Multimedia Institute for Computer Training, Anil Singh, had been running the racket for the past two-and-a-half years and had drawn several minor boys from the locality into it. Elaborating on the modus operandi, he said X-rated movies used to be downloaded and stored in the hard drives of the eight computer terminals. A viewer could watch them against a payment of Rs 25 for half-an-hour. he detective department raid was preceded by a series of complaints from residents of Ekbalpore.

10 more held in tease case

Ten persons were arrested on Friday for ransacking the house of Avijit Konar, on Joygopal Roychowdhuri Road in Barrackpore. Six were arrested on Thursday evening. Among those held was Supriya Nandan (alias Bua), who had led a gang which harassed Konar?s daughter on Wednesday evening. onar had registered an FIR against Bua, said to be a supporter of the DYFI (the CPM?s youth wing). On his return from the police station, Konar found that Bua and a mob of 50 had gone on the rampage at his residence.

Civic tax review

Mayor Subrata Mukherjee has promised the city developers? forum that the civic body will take a fresh look at the municipal tax structure and try and streamline things to bring the rates on par with other cities. Mukherjee was inaugurating Property Fair 2005 at the Ice Skating Rink on Friday. The housing expo (January 7-10) has been organised by Credai (Confederation of Real Estate Developers? Association of India), Bengal chapter and has 35 stalls by builders, real estate agents and home finance companies.

Dacoity arrests

Five criminals were arrested in Khariberia, Bishnupur (South 24-Parganas), early on Friday in connection with a dacoity at a health centre on Monday. The dacoits had looted more than Rs 6.7 lakh. Superintendent of district police S.N. Gupta said Rs 1.8 lakh had been recovered from the five. Three more persons, including a woman, involved in the crime are absconding. The taxi used by the dacoits has been impounded.

Oil mill theft

Around Rs 25,000 was burgled from an oil mill on Madan Mohan Burman Street, in Jorasanko, on Thursday night. Police said the burglars had entered the premises after breaking open the locks of the gates. The owner came to know of the theft on Friday morning, after he opened the mill. On Wednesday night, burglars had broken into a temple in New Alipore and looted jewellery and other valuables, worth Rs 50,000. No one has been arrested as police have failed to make any headway in the case.

Murder probe

Six days after the murder of 15-year-old Kanika Hazra in Asokenagar, North 24-Parganas, police are yet to identify the killers. The girl went missing on January 1 and her body was found beside the Bidyadhari river the next day. Four persons, including two women, have been interrogated. Police said Kanika had been close to the four.

Run over

Ashok Ghosh, 70, was run over by a private bus on route 239A near tank 13, in the Bidhannagar (south) police station area, on Friday morning. Police said Ghosh was crossing the road when the bus mowed him down. He died on the spot. The driver has been arrested and the vehicle impounded.
