Bengal cops quiz suspected rebels

Jamshedpur, Dec. 14: A two-member police team from Midnapore district in West Bengal today interrogated five suspected extremists arrested by the East Singhbhum police from Makuli village under Ghatshila police station.

The extremism-ravaged Makuli village is situated on the Midnapore border and the special task force (STF) of the district police arrested these rebels, including a woman, during a raid on Sunday following a tip-off from the Midnapore police.

The STF recovered firearms, Rs 13,100 in cash, explosives, police uniforms, FM transistors and electric wires from the house of the village chief, Ram Krishna Murmu. A currency seal of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Salboni unit, was also found. However, Mumru managed to give the police a slip and fled the village minutes after the raid was conducted.

Ghatshila police said, officer-in-charge of Salboni police station Sushant Rajwanshi and the inspector of special anti-extremist cell of the Midnapore police, Pannalal Goswami, visited Ghatshila police station and quizzed the five rebels for hours.

?The Midnapore police officials asked the arrested persons about the recent blast triggered by the rebels at Kakrajhore that destroyed forest guest houses in the district. They also asked them about hideouts of the rebels in Midnapore and the specific areas of operation of the Naxalites there,? Ghatshila police sources said.

However, they said they knew nothing about the movements of the rebels in Midnapore and denied having any links with rebels either in Jharkhand or West Bengal.

?They also pleaded ignorance about the cash and the RBI seal recovered from Murmu?s residence,? police sources said.

The Midnapore police officials left Ghatshila in the afternoon after assuring the Ghatshila police of more information on the five suspected rebels.

?We are convinced that these five persons belong to a group operating in the border areas of Ghatshila and Midnapore. When they saw the STF personnel during the raid, they tried to flee. We chased them till we caught hold of them,? a police official said.
