Death probe

Burdwan, Dec. 8: The body of a 35-year old hotelier, Badal Sheikh, was found in Hattala pond at Karaj village, 180 km from Calcutta, under Katwa police station. He went missing on Monday night.

Badal?s brother Azad blamed police for the death. He claimed Badal was returning home when some policemen chased him. Scared, he jumped into the pond. District police superintendent Neeraj Singh denied the charge, but said a probe has been ordered.

Calcutta: A court convicted five persons for the murder of CPM leader Gurupada Bagchi in Kasba on January 23, 2000, and acquitted six others.
