Trespasser held in Swastha Bhavan

A man was arrested at Swastha Bhavan, Salt Lake, for rummaging government files. Police said Kaushik Chatterjee, who claimed to be a doctor, was detained at Bidhannagar (East) police station on Saturday and arrested on Sunday. He told police that he was a resident of Hind Motor and had appeared for the West Bengal Health Service Commission exam. e came to Swastha Bhavan to know whether he had qualified. A security guard at the building said Chatterjee had asked him to show the notice board. He was accompanying the guard but suddenly entered a room and started rummaging the files. Police are verifying Chatterjee?s claims.

Protest over seer arrest

Over 450 activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad-backed Dharmaraksha Sanjukta Sangharsha Samity were arrested for violating the law during their protest march on Sunday afternoon. The march, organised to protest the Kanchi Sankaracharya?s arrest, kicked off from Raja Subodh Mullick Square around 2 pm and ended on Rani Rashmoni Road after about an hour.

Flyover unveil

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will inaugurate the Mourigram flyover, in Howrah, on Tuesday evening. Connecting National Highway 6 to Vidyasagar Setu, the flyover will have four-ft-wide footpaths on either side. The 800-metre flyover could have been inaugurated in November, but the public works department (PWD) was waiting for the chief minister to find time to inaugurate it. rojected to be have been ready in just 30 months, the project took over six years to complete, thanks to delays by agencies involved, as well as a funds crunch.

Impersonation

Three people were arrested at Marine Engineering College, in Taratala, on Sunday afternoon on charges of impersonation. The three were appearing for an income-tax and customs examination. On cross-checking their identities, the invigilators were certain that they were impostors. The college authorities immediately informed Taratala police.

Power disruption

Power supply to parts of Sankrail, Howrah, will be disrupted almost throughout December, with the CESC carrying out maintenance work on the 6 KV overhead lines in the area. Supply to Sardarpara and Bharat Co-operative Society will be affected between 10 am and 3 pm on December 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 27 and 30.

Memorial lecture

The Prof RN Chatterjee memorial oration will be delivered by the noted cardiologist from the US Prof Kanu Chatterjee at the anatomy hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday. The lecture is being organised by the hospital?s cardiology department.

Convocation

Defence minister Pranab Mukherjee is scheduled to attend the annual convocation of the Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management on December 11. State higher education minister Satyasadhan Chakraborty will be the guest of honour.

Cheat arrested

A 36-year-old man was arrested in Bantra, Howrah, when he dropped in to meet a prospective bride on Sunday evening. On seeing Gopal Mallick, local residents alleged that he was a cheat and started assaulting him. Officers said Mallick had earlier married thrice.
