Doctors in the dock

If you have been thinking of going to Ukraine, Russia or Belarus to study medicine, think again. The Supreme Court has upheld the Medical Council of India?s stand that foreign medical degree holders have to clear a screening test before being allowed to practise in India. The SC dismissed a number of petitions filed by doctors who had passed out from medical colleges in the erstwhile USSR. The doctors had contended that they got their degrees after a six-year long course during which they had cleared many tests and therefore, should not be subjected to more tests to practise in India.

Playing fair

If you are a girl and become a scientist or a mathematician in future, chances are you studied in a girls-only school. A recent UK survey has thrown up a rather alarming finding ? girls are much more likely to specialise in science and math when they study in single-sex schools because boys undermine their confidence in mixed classes.

According to the study, girls tend to see science and math as ?male? subjects in co-ed schools where boys dominate the lessons, the survey says.
