Man crushed under wheels

A 30-year-old unidentified man was crushed under the wheels of a bus on route 235 which he tried to board on Tuesday. Police said the incident occurred at 7 pm on Diamond Harbour Road, near St Thomas School. he man tried to board the bus through the front gate. But he slipped and fell and was crushed by the rear wheels. He was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he was declared dead. The bus has been impounded and the driver arrested.

Missing boy?s body found

Police in Howrah recovered the body of a two-year-old boy, who went missing from his residence on Monday afternoon, from a manhole early on Tuesday. Local residents said the boy, Kalu Sankar, went missing while playing in the corridors of his family?s apartment building on Ramlal Mukherjee Road, in Golabari. Two persons have been detained for questioning.

Cop suicide

Shankar Lama, a constable at Taltala police station, committed suicide on Tuesday by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his quarters in Salt Lake. An inquiry has been ordered into the reasons behind the death. Local residents said Lama was suffering from depression and had been keeping to himself for the past few days.

Mayor?s refusal

Mayor Subrata Mukherjee has rejected the Victoria Memorial Hall?s proposal to shift the labour quarters to the park coming up on the Maidan, opposite Rabindra Sadan. Mukherjee will take up the matter with the state government.

Salt Lake fire

A fire broke out at the office of ward 15 of Bidhannagar Municipality on Tuesday. The ward is represented by civic chairman Dilip Gupta. The fire broke out at 12.30 pm, when the office was closed. Two fire engines doused the blaze in 30 minutes. Some documents were damaged. Officials suspect the fire was caused by a short-circuit.

Revenge assault

Rano Sardar, 20, was seriously injured after he was hit on the head with a sharp weapon in Budge Budge, South 24-Parganas, on Monday night. Sardar was returning home when the incident took place. Police said Sardar was targeted because he took part in a drive to demolish illicit liquor shops in the area. He was admitted to hospital in a critical condition.

Kid run over

Six-year-old Rabi Das was run over by a train near Baruipur, on the southern fringes of the city, on Monday night. Government Railway Police sources said Das was returning home from tuition when the mishap took place. Train services on the Sealdah (South) section were disrupted for some time.

Sclerosis meet

The Multiple Sclerosis Society of India will organise a get-together of patients on November 21 at the Calcutta Port Trust guest house on Chowrighee Road. Sujoy Chakraborty, commissioner of police and chairman of the Society?s eastern chapter, said the programme aims to cheer up the patients and keep them and their families in good spirits. Multiple sclerosis is a nerve disorder, which affects mostly students.

Blast victim

Two youths were seriously injured in a blast in Madhyamgram, on the northern fringes of the city, on Monday night. Police said the two have been identified as Ramen Roy, 20, and Debabrata Roy, 21. Both have been admitted to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Road mishap

A speeding Matador van lost control and crashed into a Kali puja pandal near the Cossipore Gun and Shell Factory on Tuesday evening, injuring three persons.
