Report nails hooch for Tangra deaths

The death toll in the Tangra hooch tragedy crossed 35 on Sunday, even as a chemical examination report confirmed that there were traces of methyl alcohol in the samples of illicit liquor and pork collected from the affected area. Police, however, are still refusing to admit that spurious liquor alone was responsible for the tragedy. Seven persons have died after consuming illicit liquor,? said Ranvir Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (eastern suburban division). ?Joint raids by police and excise department officials are on to apprehend the manufacturers of illicit liquor in the area,? he added. Seven persons have been arrested so far in this connection.

Pre-bandh meeting

Transport minister Subhas Chakraborty has called a meeting with transport operators at Writers? Buildings on Tuesday. The meeting will discuss how to keep services running on November 17, the day the SUCI has called a state-wide bandh. Transport department officials said copies of the Calcutta High Court order directing the state government to keep all services operative on bandh days has been sent to all transport companies.

Tram on track

Tram services resumed on the two-km stretch between Gariahat and Park Circus on Sunday. The services were suspended on September 1 last year for relaying of tracks embedded in concrete. Engaged by the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners, Tantia Construction had executed the project, with funds from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.

Dental seats

State health minister Surjya Kanta Mishra has requested the Dental Council of India (DCI) to allot 100 more seats for under-graduate dental courses. The minister made the plea while speaking at a conference, also attended by DCI president Anil Kohli, at Science City on Sunday. Kohli later said the council was planning to raise the number of seats to 160 from the next academic session.

Annakut fest

Shree Swaminarayan Mandir in Bhowanipore celebrated Annakut festival on Sunday. More than 700 vegetarian food items ? including Indian, Mexican, Chinese, Italian, Thai and Spanish ? were offered to the deity. Karan Paul of the Apeejay group of companies performed Annakut aarti. The bhog was later distributed to devotees in the city and other parts of eastern India.

Firing report

The Committee for Protection of Democratic Rights, West Bengal, has demanded immediate publication of the Ganguly commission report related to police firing at Sealdah railway station on September 21, 1994, in which five persons were killed. The firing followed trouble that had erupted after Sankar Chakraborty, former professor of Santipur College, was allegedly caught travelling without a ticket. ccording to Dayamoy Biswas, president of the rights body, the government had appointed a commission under Kalyanmoy Ganguly, retired judge of Calcutta High Court, to probe the firing. The report was submitted on October 31, 2003.

House fire

A fire broke out at a two-storeyed residential building in Kasundia, Shibpur, on Sunday morning. Two fire engines battled for an hour to put out the blaze.

Road rage

A CTC bus hit a two-wheeler at the Lovers Lane-Kidderpore Road crossing on Sunday evening, killing a child and injuring two persons. Tuntun Yadav, 5, was pronounced dead at SSKM Hospital, while Rameshwar Yadav, 28, and Biju Mullick, 22, sustained fractures and other injuries. The bus driver fled after the incident.
