Polish woman molesters held

In an overnight raid, three people were arrested in connection with the molestation of a Polish woman at Dover Terrace on Navami night. The key suspect is still at large. The 28-year-old woman, associated with a city NGO, was harassed by four drunken youths while she was on her way to an apartment with a friend. Police first arrested Dilip Jadav, driver of a doctor, at the Hazra Road-Deodhar Street crossing. After interrogating him, officers of Gariahat police station arrested Raju Dhara from his Dover Lane residence. Following their confession, Swapan Kaushik was arrested at his Kasba residence. he three told police they had committed the crime when drunk. Anuj Sharma, deputy commissioner (south), said the culprits had been identified after a three-day investigation.

Civic official dismissed

Maniklal Chatterjee, chief assistant of the treasury department in the Calcutta Municipal Corporation?s Gariahat office, was dismissed on Thursday on charges of misappropriation of tax payers? money. According to mayor Subrata Mukherjee, Chatterjee had misappropriated Rs 58,000 by tampering with computer records.

Road repair

Repair of roads with tram tracks has been put off. Mayor Subrata Mukherjee said on Thursday the state government had fooled people before the Pujas by promising Rs 3.5 crore funds to the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) for repairing roads with tram tracks. He said the allotment had reached the CMC only now, and the fund was given as the civic body?s share of entertainment tax. ?Hence, I have decided to postpone the repair work,? the mayor said.

Protesters held

At least 40 members of the Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) were arrested on Park Street on Thursday morning for showing black flags and trying to submit a memorandum to Myanmarese head of state Thane Shwe. ujato Bhadra, APDR general secretary, was among those arrested. Shwe was coming out of the Myanmarese consulate office on Park Street at the time of the incident. A delegation from Myanmar, led by Shwe, is in the city on a two-day trip.

Gantry penalty

The civic authorities have slapped a demand notice for over Rs 19 lakh on Grand & More MAPP for erecting two gantries on either end of the AJC Bose Road flyover without proper permission. Municipal commissioner Debashis Som said the amount includes penalty for unauthorised erection of gantries.

Body found

The body of a 45-year-old unidentified male was found in the Ucchepur area of Barrackpore on Thursday morning. The throat was slit.

Star theatre

The Calcutta Municipal Corporation has decided to demolish shops in front of Star theatre as the owners have failed to move to a new location. Mayor Subrata Mukherjee said rehabilitation of the shop owners was not part of Star theatre revival project.

Marked absent

Saibal Chakroborty, block development officer of Howrah?s Shyampur, on Thursday locked the room of the food department in his office as none of the four employees turned up till noon. When the four finally arrived at 1 pm, Chakroborty asked them to go home and apply for casual leave. He has sent a report to the district magistrate, S. Kishore.
