Calcutta side clinches cup

kOKRAJHAR MEET

Kokrajhar, Oct. 17: George Telegraph of Calcutta today annexed the ninth Sujit Narzary Gold Cup football tournament, defeating Sports Authority of India (SAI) of Guwahati 5-2 in the final here.

The Calcutta team took the lead in the first minute through Nigerian Franchis, who also found the net again in the 55th minute.

Another Nigerian in their ranks, Sunday Tho, scored a brace in the 64th and 75th minutes, while Kishore Malik scored one in the 52nd minute.

Tho was later adjudged Man of the Tournament.

SAI?s Mani Kanta Brahma, who is from Kokrajhar, and Kikuzo Zhotzo scored in the 68th and 85th minutes to reduce the margin.

The match was marred by frayed tempers that led to the booking of SAI?s Achinta Basumatary, who intentionally kicked George Telegraph goalkeeper Ganesh Singh.

The game was stopped for nearly 20 minutes because the Calcutta side refused to play after the incident.

Later in the game, the Calcutta outfit?s Basanta Choudhury was sent off for foul play, while two others were booked.
