Tripura no to rebel plea for CM post

Agartala, Oct. 17: The truce between the National Liberation Front of Tripura NLFT (Nayanbasi), the Union home ministry and the Tripura government may take a new turn with state finance minister Badal Chowdhury ruling out political concession to the outfit during negotiations.

Chowdhury, who returned from Delhi after a meeting with defence minister Pranab Mukherjee and finance minister P. Chidambaram, said the Left Front was prepared to take care of the economic rehabilitation of NLFT (Nayanbasi) rebels but no political concession would be made.

?They (members of the outfit) are holding discussions with the Centre and we have already communicated our decision that no political demand will be acceptable to the Left Front,? Chowdhury said.

The minister was answering a query on the state government?s stand regarding NLFT leader Ananta Debbarma?s demand that Nayanbasi Jamatya be appointed chief minister of Tripura just as late Laldenga became Mizoram chief minister of Mizoram as part of the MNF Accord signed in 1986.

?The socio-political realities of Mizoram and Tripura are different and what happened in Mizoram in a particular context 18 years ago can not be replicated in Tripura now,? Chowdhury said, dismissing the demand as ?totally untenable?.

He also ruled out accepting any political demand whatsoever of the NLFT (Nayanbasi) group.

The NLFT (Nayanbasi) outfit had signed a ?ceasefire? agreement on April 15 this year when the outfit?s chief, Nayanbasi Jamatya, met then Union home minister L.K. Advani in Delhi.

Early this month, the ceasefire agreement was renewed for two-and-a-half months, till December 31, at a meeting in Delhi.

At the meeting, Jamatya also submitted a 10-point charter of political demands which include reservation of 50 per cent of Assembly seats for tribals, upgradation of the ADC to the status of Bodo Territorial Council (BTC) and restoration of alienated tribal land.

The finance minister?s announcement has provoked strong reaction in the NLFT (Nayanbasi) camp. Ananta Debbarma, closest lieutenant of Nayanbasi, said the attitude of the state government would stand in the way of a peaceful solution to the insurgency problem.

?We have every right to demand appointment of Nayanbasi Jamatya as chief minister because he is an indigenous tribal leader whereas the government is being run now by a group of infiltrators,? said Debbarma.

He, however, indicated that his group would press the issue in future discussions with the Union home ministry.
