Cops chase gang to recover loot
Dacoits looted a tailoring shop in Belgachhia early on Tuesday, only to be intercepted by a police team on their way back. Paritosh Mandal, 23, a resident of Ultadanga, was arrested. A pipegun and a bhojali were seized from him.
he five-member gang stormed Modern Fashion House at 3.30 am and forced the employees at gunpoint to hand over stitched clothes and dress material worth Rs 10,000. Stepping out, they hailed a taxi, snatched the wheel and headed for Mangla Haat, in Howrah.
olicemen on patrol became suspicious and tailed the taxi from the Shyambazar five-point crossing. The cab was intercepted when it rammed into the divider on Bhupen Bose Avenue. Four of the dacoits fled. The entire loot was recovered.
Teen murder bail rejected
A bail petition was moved before the sub-divisional judicial magistrate, Howrah, on Tuesday on behalf of the four accused in the Kuntal Sain murder case. The plea was rejected and the accused — Jyotirmoy Mukherjee, Sampad Mukherjee, Arijit Pal and Manjusha Mukherjee — were remanded in 14 days’ judicial custody.
Power crisis
The city and adjoining areas had no respite from power cuts on Tuesday as the shortfall in CESC-served areas increased to 150 MW in the evening. The situation was worse in the districts. CESC officials said the state electricity board (SEB) supplied only 185 MW to the CESC grid. Power department sources said SEB could not meet CESC’s requirement because of low generation by some state-run units as well as the National Thermal Power Corporation plants in Farakka.
Booster station
Mayor Subrata Mukherjee has endorsed mayor-in-council member Sovan Chatterjee’s proposal to set up a 2.5-million-gallon-capacity booster pumping station in New Park, near Tangra. Mukherjee will inspect the site on Wednesday. The station, to be set up at a cost of Rs 10 crore, will make up for the shortfall in the supply from the Park Circus booster pumping station.
Road death
An unidentified motorcyclist was killed after colliding with a truck on National Highway 6 near Sankrail on Tuesday morning. The truck driver fled in his vehicle.
Piracy check
A seminar on tackling video and audio piracy was held for policemen in Alipore on Tuesday. The seminar was organised by the Paschim Banga Non-Gazetted Police Karmachari Samiti, Indian Music Industry, Samanaya Samiti and NGO Diksha. The organisers gave a “live demonstration” on how to detect fake and pirated CDs and cassettes.
Robbery
Four youths, armed with pipeguns and choppers, made off with Rs 50,000 and gold ornaments worth Rs 2.5 lakh from a jewellery workshop at 44, Nalini Seth Road, at 12.30 am on Monday.
Peace march
More than a lakh people are expected to join a peace march, to be organised by 15 Left parties on September 1. The march will kick off from Deshapriya Park, in south Calcutta, at 12.30 pm and end at Deshabandhu Park, in the north. Since the marchers will pass through busy central Calcutta roads, traffic disruptions are feared in large parts of the city.
CM schedule
Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee leaves for Mumbai on Wednesday evening. From there, he will set off for Cochin. Bhattacharjee will inaugurate a CPM office on Thursday and a hospital the next day in Kerala. He will be back in Mumbai on Saturday for a business roadshow.
