BSF stay order

New Delhi, Aug. 6: The home ministry has decided against resuming the replacement of the BSF with the CRPF in the face of recent militant attacks on the latter in Jammu and Kashmir.

The ministry instructed security agencies to draft a report on the measures needed to counter suicide attacks, after which an effective policy would be worked out.

The decision to maintain status quo on CRPF deployment in Jammu and Kashmir was taken today at a high-level meeting convened by home minister Shivraj Patil.

The security review came a day after nine CRPF jawans were killed by a suicide squad that had stormed the paramilitary’s camp in Srinagar on Wednesday.

Patil had earlier dispatched home secretary Dhirendra Singh and K.S. Ramasubban, joint secretary, Kashmir affairs, for a spot assessment of the situation in the state and to offer condolences to families of the CRPF men who died.

Emerging from the meeting, BSF director-general Ajai Raj Sharma said issues pertaining to internal security, especially the spate of suicide attacks, were discussed.

He added that infiltration on the international border and the LoC had picked up considerably in June and July though the figure was still lower than in the corresponding period last year.

It was decided that the BSF would continue to deal with counter-insurgency operations till further orders as the force had more battalions in the state.

The meeting was attended by national security adviser J.N. Dixit, and security adviser in the PMO M.K. Narayanan and other officials.
