Murder, suicide by jealous spouse

A 35-year-old man, Sheikh Azan, committed suicide on Friday after killing wife Basira Bibi with the blow of a table fan. According to the police, Azan, a resident of Shiuli, in Barrackpore, on the northern end of the city, suspected Basira of being involved in an extra-marital liaison with a local youth. On Thursday night, after a quarrel broke out between the couple, Azan hit Basira with the table fan. To ensure that she had died, he also forced some poison into her mouth. Soon after, Azan committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his bedroom.

Boy run over by bus

Thirteen-year-old Nabibur Mollah was run over by a private bus at Bhangore, in the Calcutta Leather Complex police station area, on Friday. Police said Mollah was trying to cross the road when the mishap occurred. The bus was headed for Esplanade. The driver fled the spot, leaving the vehicle behind.

Train on track

The Sealdah-Jammu Tawi Express (3151 Up/3152 Down), earlier cancelled till August 13 due to floods and breaches on the Ambala division of Northern Railway, will start running between Sealdah and Saharanpur from Saturday.

School collapse

Seventeen students and a teacher were injured when the shed of their classroom caved in on them in the Titagarh police station area. Police said the school shed had not been repaired for quite a while and collapsed under Thursday’s heavy shower. The injured have been admitted to BN Basu Hospital, where 10 were stated to be in a critical condition.

Memorandum

Residents of Metiabruz have submitted a memorandum to chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, demanding a flyover in the area to facilitate the local garment-manufacturing business. Mansur Rahaman Mollah, secretary of the Metiabruz Nagarik Committee also said that the residents have demanded a hospital and a double-lane road, connecting Metiabruz with Santoshpur railway station.

Coach replaced

The first class coach attached to the Sealdah-Lalgola Bhagirathi Express (3103 Up and 3104 Down) will be replaced by an AC chair car coach from September, an Eastern Railway spokesperson said. Passengers who have already booked berths in the first class coach will be refunded.

Civic checks

Mayor Subrata Mukherjee brought the borough-level civic development projects under the scanner by entrusting three deputy chief engineers to scrutinise all project proposals before final approval of the director-general (civil). The decision was taken after vested political interests were detected in some proposals drawn up by some executive engineers.

Showroom loot

Armed men stormed a mobile phone showroom early on Friday and escaped with cash and phone sets worth lakhs. According to the police, four miscreants entered the showroom through the air-conditioner shaft and took away the phone sets. They looted all the money from the cash counter as well.

Girl crushed

A 17-year-old girl, Firdous Banu, was killed at her Nazir Lane residence on Friday after a dilapidated staircase caved in on her. She was taken to SSKM Hospital, where she was declared dead.
