Truant girl dead

Calcutta, Aug. 4: The body of one of three girls who fled from school on Saturday was recovered after the other two, who returned home, were questioned.

The body of 13-year-old Indrani Ukil was found near Canning station tonight. The GRP will fetch her parents tomorrow for a final identification. Kanka Biswas and Mousumi Sardar, Indrani’s mates in Ram Krishna Sishu Bihar of Regent Park, returned home on Monday and Wednesday, respectively. After interrogation, Moushumi led the police to the body.

Snakebite

Behrampore: Prabir Mondal, 13, died of snakebite on Monday night allegedly due to lack of attention at the Behrampore Sadar hospital. His mother has lodged a complaint.

Oil protest

Calcutta: The Left Front has decided to hold a string of rallies in Calcutta and the district towns on August 8. “We must raise our voices against the Centre’s decision to raise fuel prices twice in recent months,” Biman Bose said.

Poet widow

Calcutta: Geeta Bandopadhyay, the 82-year-old widow of poet Subhas Mukhopadhyay, died at SSKM hospital. She was suffering from cancer. Mukhopadhyay died in July last year.
