CBI books 30 govt officers

New Delhi, June 25: The CBI today conducted nationwide raids, registering cases against government officials and seizing “ill-gotten” wealth worth over Rs 7 crore.

In all, 38 cases have been registered against 50 people, of whom 30 are government servants, said CBI director U.S. Mishra. No one has been arrested.

Disproportionate assets cases have been registered against seven officials of UTI, central excise, income tax, Cement Corporation of India, BSNL and customs. “Movable assets worth Rs 28.72 lakh have been seized while a total of Rs 7.43 crore movable and immovable properties were detected,” Mishra said.

R.K. Aggarwal, the commissioner of central excise, Mumbai, is among those in trouble. A complaint that Aggarwal had demanded a bribe of Rs 1 crore had put the CBI on his trail.

An additional commissioner of customs in Mumbai, C.K. Aggarwal, was also booked. Raids revealed he had allegedly entered into a criminal conspiracy with private parties, causing a loss of Rs 15 crore to the exchequer, the CBI chief added.

The joint commissioner of customs, Mumbai, Hemant Kothikar, has been slapped with charges after property worth Rs 4.12 crore was found registered in his and his family’s name.
