Jamshedpur, June 10: Labour commissioner Nidhi Khare today held a meeting with the management of Tata Motors over problems faced by contractual labourers and employees posted in the companys scrap yard.
About 300 contractual workers involved in maintenance work inside the factory premises complained that they were deprived of their statutory benefits, including provident fund and gratuity, by the firm which has engaged them.
Khare, after hearing out the workers, asked them to produce documents indicating that they have worked for 240 days in a year. However, as they failed to produce any documentary evidence, the meeting could not proceed further.
About 68 employees posted in the scrap yard section of the company have been demanding regularisation of their services. At the meeting these workers claimed that they have been engaged in the permanent nature of job, hence they should be regularised. However, Dilip Sengupta, a senior divisional manager of Tata Motors who was present at the meeting, rejected the demand. He said the employees at the scrap yard work under contract and have no legal entity.
