Climbers dead

Calcutta, June 10: Two city police sergeants and three constables, who were part of a 14-member team trying to scale Tindhari peak, were killed in landslide in Uttaranchal last night.

The dead were identified as sergeants Jiban Chand and Chandan Bhattacharya and constables Tarun Mandal, Partha Sarathi Das and Uttam Debnath, all members of the reserve force.

Rape verdict

Suri (Birbhum): A CPM activist and former panchayat member was among 15 people jailed for seven years for abducting three sisters and raping them. The Rampurhat subdivisional court judge found all the accused guilty. The gang raided the girls’ house in February 1986.

Lightning toll

Behrampore/Calcutta: Five people were struck by lightning during Norwesters on Wednesday in Murshidabad and South 24-Parganas. At Khargram, about 260 km from Calcutta, four people grazing cows were struck when they took shelter in a hut. A man was killed at Patharpratima, about 110 km from the city, when returning home braving heavy rain.

Milk boss held

Chinsurah: The MD of Damodar Cooperative Milk Union, Chanchal Sanyal, was arrested on charges of cheating another milk producer of Rs 13 lakh.
