Swiss man arrested for airport damage

Airport police arrested a Swiss national at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Monday for allegedly breaking the glass panes of the door in the room of the airport manager. ccording to airport sources, Jose Candaus, 22, went to the airport manager at the international terminal of the city airport and asked for an air ticket to Bangkok. When told that tickets would have to be purchased from the airline’s counter, the youth was annoyed and in a fit of rage, shattered the glass panes of the door. Candaus was taken to the airport police station and arrested.

New acting chief justice

Justice Ajay Nath Roy of Calcutta High Court has been appointed acting Chief Justice. The order was issued after former high court Chief Justice Ashok Kumar Mathur was elevated to the Supreme Court.

Temple robbery

Dacoits raided a temple in Baruipur, on the southern fringes of the city, on Sunday and fled with ornaments and cash worth more than Rs 1 lakh. No arrests have been made yet.

Hit by bus

A 70-year-old man was seriously injured on Monday when he was hit by a private bus at the MG Road-Kalakar Street crossing. Arup Roy, a resident of Majidpara Road, in Tiljala, is undergoing treatment at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. Police said the bus, on route 215, was impounded but the driver fled.

Gangsters held

Three members of a gang were arrested at Sonarpur on Sunday night and two pistols and live cartridges were recovered from them. The kingpin of the gang, however, gave police the slip.

Workers’ agitation

Nearly 2,500 workers of Empire Jute Mill in Barrackpore, demonstrated in front of the factory after a suspension-of-work notice was issued on Monday. According to sources, the notice was issued because of low production in the mill for the past few months.

Water scarcity

Water supply has been disrupted in Mahestala and Budge Budge, on the southern fringes of the city, after a pipeline along Budge Budge Trunk Road was damaged in an accident.

Suicide attempt

A 36-year-old woman tried to commit suicide by jumping on the Metro tracks at Rabindra Sadan station on Monday evening. Metro officials said the woman jumped on the tracks at 8.33 pm when three compartments of the TD 170 Down train had already entered the platform, but fell in the drain beside the tracks.
