Doctors rushed for Umer uncle

New Delhi, June 5: A day after the co-ordination committee on Kashmir met here, the Centre has flown four medical specialists to Srinagar to attend to Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umer Farooq’s uncle.

The senior leader’s uncle, Maulvi Mushtaq, was shot at by militants on May 29 when he was offering afternoon prayers at a mosque in downtown Srinagar.

The Hurriyat has linked the attack to the two rounds of talks the separatist conglomerate had with L.K. Advani. This has prompted the Manmohan Singh government to increase the security provided to Hurriyat leaders.

The Centre had assured the leaders it would provide all help in attending to Mushtaq, a senior functionary of the Awami Action Committee. Today, it flew across four specialists from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here.

Mushtaq has been undergoing treatment at the Soura Medical Institute. An official said the operation would probably rank among the most crucial ones the specialists will ever conduct, given its political implications.

Officials said the home ministry was in touch with Farooq. Mushtaq’s deteriorating condition figured in today’s talks between Union home minister Shivraj Patil and .. Vohra, the Centre’s point man on Kashmir.
