Two killed, two hurt in road mishaps

Two men were killed and two others injured in separate accidents on Monday. Gopal Chandra De, 42, was run over by a lorry at the crossing of Cossipore Road and KN Das Road in Chitpore. De was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where he was pronounced dead. However, the driver could not be arrested as he had fled with the vehicle. In another accident, a scooterist Mohammed Osman, 27, was killed and the pillion-rider, Prahlad Razzak, was seriously injured when they were dashed by a truck at the crossing of Sarat Bose Road and Rashbehari Avenue. Both of them were admitted to Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratisthan where Osman was pronounced dead and Razzak was admitted in a critical condition. Police have seized the truck but the driver fled. In another accident, a 35-year-old man, Shyamal Saha was seriously injured when he was dashed by an unknown vehicle near Gwalior Ghat on Strand Road in the South Port police station area on Monday. Saha was admitted to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition.

Eight-year term for dacoity

The fifth fast track court of the city sessions court on Monday sentenced three persons to eight years’ rigorous imprisonment and ordered the to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 each for committing dacoity in an apartment in Nalini Sarkar Street in north Calcutta in August 2002. They had made off with gold ornaments and Rs 1.5 lakh.

Bombs found

Three live bombs were recovered from a deserted place at the crossing of Sarat Bose Road and Southern Avenue on Monday. Police said they were tipped off about the bombs and they defused the explosives. A search is on for the criminals who had left them there.

Dacoits convicted

Additional district and session judge N.N. Ghosh at Alipore on Monday convicted Bapi Thakur and four others for their involvement in a dacoity in a flat on Northern Avenue in the Chitpore area. They had taken away gold ornaments worth Rs 4 lakh.

Man murdered

A 30-year-old man, Sibu Sardar, was found murdered on Monday at Ladies Park in Ultadanga. Police said his throat was slit with a sharp weapon. According to them, he had criminal records.

Boy dies

A 12-year-old boy, Babu Mondal was found murdered at Baruipur on the southern fringes of the city on Monday. Police said Babu had been missing since Saturday and on Monday his body was found floating in a pond. According to family sources, Babu had left home after stealing some money. No one was arrested.

Civic work protest

Residents of Sonarpur, on the southern fringes of the city, demonstrated in front of the municipality office on Monday when a vast area was flooded owing to faulty work done by water works labourers. The residents complained that several houses were damaged as the workers dug the road haphazardly.

Roadblock

Residents of south Dum Dum blocked the busy Jessore Road near Nager Bazar on Monday afternoon for about three hours protesting increasing criminal activities in the area. Locals complained that Totan, a local goon, kidnapped Raju Das, secretary of a vigilante party set up in the area, on Sunday night. As Raju did not return even on Monday afternoon, local residents demonstrated demanding the arrest of Totan and his associates. They urged the local police to trace Raju.

Youth shot

A 25-year old man, Saraswaraj Ahmed was shot and injured by a sharp weapon by Roxy Aslam and three others on Sunday night at Ekbalpur. According to police, Ahmed was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where he is undergoing treatment. Police suspect that this was the fall-out of gang rivalry. No one was arrested.
