Court stops sale of Dunlop assets

Justice Amitava Lala of Calcutta High Court on Monday passed an interim order restraining the Appellate Authority of Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (AAIFR) from selling the assets and properties of Dunlop India Limited situated in and outside Calcutta without the approval of the state government. The judge also asked the AAIFR to keep the sale proceeds of the assets of the company’s Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore unit in a separate account and not to disburse the amount without the court’s leave. The court order followed by a petition by the unions of the company, alleging that the AAIFR had decided to sell the property and assets of Bengal without informing the state government.

CPM leader shot dead

CPM zonal committee member Akhilesh Sharma, 55, was shot dead in Baruipur on the southern fringes of the city on Monday night. Police said that the incident occurred near Ghola bazar when Sharma was returning from the party office. Five men surrounded him and fired from a close range. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. South 24-Parganas district secretary of the party Shantimoy Bhattacharya alleged that Sharma had been killed by Trinamul Congress supporters, while local Trinamul Congress MLA Arup Bhadra denied the allegation and described the death as a result of an internal dispute.

Jute case

Justice Pinaki Ghosh of Calcutta High Court on Monday refused to hear a case filed by the Indian Jute Mill Association, challenging the decision of the union government to curtail the quota of gunny bags in the packaging of food grains and sugar. The court asked the IJMA as well as the advocate-general of the state to move the petition before the Supreme Court as a similar case was pending before it.

Brother murder

Achintya Kalai, 36, was killed on Sunday night when three brothers of a family came to blows at Jagaddal on the northern fringes of the city. The two other brothers disappeared soon after the incident, police said, adding that a dispute over property as well as Achintya’s refusal to sever ties with a woman of the locality might have led to the dispute.

Math demise

A senior sanyasini of Sri Sarada Math, Pravrajika Nityaprana Mataji, passed away at the age of 82 at Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan on Sunday night. She had been admitted to the hospital on April 9 with cardiac problems and other ailments. She joined the Order in 1950.

The Calcutta Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) on Monday announced the completion of construction of a left turn connectivity linkage from Park Circus Bridge No. 4 up to Dr. Biresh Guha Street. The ramp is meant to ease traffic movement along the Dr Biresh Guha Street-New Park Street-Darga Road route, making it easier to reach south Calcutta from that area, a CMDA spokesperson said. The link will be opened to the public on May 18 at 5 pm.

Assaulted worker

An employee of a petrol station on Diamond Harbour Road, Dhiraj Mistri, who was seriously injured on Sunday night, was admitted to Calcutta Medical Research Institute on Monday. On Sunday night, four armed men raided the petrol station and took away more than Rs 1 lakh. As Mistri tried to resist the dacoits, they beat him up with iron rods.

Stove burst death

A housewife, Namita Saha, in her mid thirties and a resident of Ghoshbagan in the Chitpore police station area, suffered severe burns after a stove burst while she was cooking on Monday. She succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.

Suicide

A 35-year-old man, Jayanta Mondal, committed suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of the Howrah Municipal Corporation building on Monday.
