New Delhi, May 14: George Fernandes bid a tearful adieu to the defence ministry this evening at a simple ceremony in a first-floor conference room in the South Block.

“His eyes were red and moist,” an officer at the ceremony said, describing the minister’s emotions. “He gave a short speech, said he enjoyed his time here, especially all the days he spent with the uniformed services.”
