Canal-desilt drive yields grenade shell

A grenade shell was retrieved by the irrigation department staff while dredging the Circular Canal along PK Mukherjee Road on Sunday. The shell was handed over to the detective department, which contacted army experts for examining it. Detective department officials said the shell could have been dropped during World War II.

Fire sparks Trinamul slur

A fire broke out at the residence of a Trinamul Congress worker in Milannagar, in Salt Lakeís ward 23, early on Sunday. No casualty was reported, police said. Tarun Banerjee, the Trinamul worker, alleged the incident could have been the handiwork of CPM activists. But local CPM leaders have denied the allegation.

Leader assaulted

A CPM leader was assaulted by miscreants on Linton Street, in Beniapukur, on Saturday night. Jainal Alam, CPMís Beniapukur local committee secretary, was on his way home when the goons attacked him. He was beaten up with hockey sticks and later admitted to National Medical College and Hospital.

Review meet

Health minister Surjya Kanta Mishra will convene a meeting on Monday to review the performance of his department officials over the past few months. Under the scanner will be several health system development projects and the utilisation of the World Bank funds.

IMA polls

The dominant group in the Indian Medical Association (IMA), led by secretary Moloy Patra, won the elections to the associationís 36 state working committee posts and 22 central working committee posts, held earlier this week.
