Clashes in ragging aftermath

There is tension on the Rajabazar Science College campus over the alleged ragging of Niladri Das, a first-year information technology student of Calcutta University (CU). Classes have also been disrupted owing to clashes between senior and junior students.

Das, hailing from a village in Nadia district, left the technology hostel on Ballygunge Circular Road after he was allegedly tortured by a group of senior inmates for four consecutive nights from April 4. He approached the university’s students’ union for help which took the case to the police.

Even as the varsity officials referred the case to its ragging committee, officials said a group of students, said to be Niladri’s classmates, attacked some third year students of the IT department on the science college premises. The seniors alleged that two of them were severely beaten up by union members.

The situation took a turn for the worse on Thursday and Friday. CU officials said that there were reports of some senior students of the technology hostel forcing Niladri to withdraw his complaint.
