Women storm graft buster office

Malda, April 12: Almost 2,000 women workers of the Integrated Child Development Scheme today stormed the treasury officer’s room at the district collectorate and demanded payment of allowances.

Armed with banners and posters, the women demanded the travel and daily allowances due on March 31. They disrupted Gobinda Basak’s work for over half an hour from 1 pm, abused him and shouted him down when he tried to speak.

Basak had earlier undertaken a drive against bogus house rent allowance and pension claimants and recovered Rs 2 crore for the government, which was forced to roll back his transfer order following pressure from the district administration.

A large force from Englishbazar police station today coaxed the women out of the room. They flung around files in Basak’s room before walking out.

Later, the women submitted a letter of protest to district magistrate Ashok Bala, who ordered an inquiry into today’s incident.
