65-year-old hurt in dacoity-resist bid

A 65-year-old woman, Joylakshmi Kundu, was seriously injured when she tried to ward off a group of dacoits who raided her house in Durganagar, near Dum Dum, and robbed her of cash and jewellery worth Rs 60,000 early on Friday. The injured woman was admitted to a local nursing home and kept under observation. The incident took place around 1 am on Friday. Four armed robbers entered the house by breaking open the main gate. They snatched the keys of the almirahs at gunpoint from Joylakshmi’s daughter Neeta. Joylakshmi raised an alarm when the robbers were walking out. As she tried to block the door, one of the miscreants hit her on the head with an iron rod.

Measures to plug paper leak

The West Bengal Board of Higher Secondary Education has taken several security measures to prevent a paper leak before the examination. The authorities have already started sending admit cards to the schools. According to board officials, the schools authorities n Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong will have to collect admit cards from the regional centres there.

Road mishap

A 42-year-old man, Biswanath Naskar, was killed when a lorry rammed into a roadside eatery on Biren Roy Road, in Behala, on Thursday night. Naskar, a rickshaw-puller, was standing in front of the shop. The driver of the killer vehicle fled.

Man drowns

A 45-year-old man, Tarun Sarkar, drowned in the Hooghly on Friday afternoon. Police said the man, a resident of Sarkarhat Road, in Sarsuna, was travelling in a launch headed for Howrah from Chand Pal Ghat. He jumped off its deck in the middle of the river.

Goon caught

Police arrested Naru Mallik, a professional killer of Habra, in North 24-Parganas, late on Thursday from a hideout in Phultala. A team raided the den and rounded up Mallik. Police recovered a loaded revolver from him. Mallik had been absconding since 1995.

Wall collapse

An 11-year-old boy was injured when a roadside wall collapsed in Phears Lane, in the Bowbazar police station area, on Friday morning. According to police, Md Arif, the injured boy, was taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. Doctors said his condition was stable.

Jawan in brawl

Trouble broke out in Salt Lake’s GE block on Thursday night after a CRPF jawan became involved in a brawl with some slum-dwellers near tank number 12 of the township. According to the police, the jawan was trying to stop a quarrel between a woman and her mother-in-law, both residents of a nearby slum. He was drawn into an argument and allegedly hit the woman. Local residents then handed him over to the police. But later, both sides decided to withdraw the case, officials said.

Forged passport

Officials at Dum Dum airport arrested a 60-year-old citizen of Nepal, Romesh Bhandari, for travelling with a forged passport. Bhandari was on his way to Bangkok on an Indian Airlines flight on Friday afternoon when he was intercepted by security officers, who found his movements suspicious.
