City US consulate to share visa load

The US consular sections in Calcutta and New Delhi will accept non-immigrant visa applications from the Chennai and Mumbai consular districts to help those with an urgent need to travel to the US. A strong demand for non-immigrant visas, combined with new processing requirements and staff shortage, has led to a backlog in appointments for visa interviews at some US consular sections in India, said a US consulate press release on Thursday.

Body found in Laldighi

The body of an unidentified middle-aged man was found floating in Laldighi, in the Hare Street police station area, on Thursday morning. The body has been sent to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem. No injury marks were found on the body. Police suspect he had drowned while bathing in the pond.

Train traffic hit

Train services on Eastern Railway’s (ER) Sealdah-Ranaghat section were affected on Thursday when two trains developed technical snags near Titagarh at around 7 am. ER sources said two Barrackpore-bound local trains were cancelled. Services resumed at 9.30 am.

Roadblock

Residents of Shyambazar put up a roadblock near the five-point crossing on Thursday afternoon after local boy Sadhan Mondol was hit by a bus on route 240. Sadhan suffered minor injuries.

Red-light litter

The Calcutta Municipal Corporation’s conservancy wing will introduce sweeping and door-to-door collection of garbage in the city’s red-light areas in the afternoon. Assistant director, conservancy, Swapan Mahapatra said Sonagachhi, Kidderpore, Kalighat, Bowbazar and Lokermath would come under the purview.

Fake CD haul

Enforcement Branch officers recovered pirated compact discs and cassettes of a popular music company from a warehouse on Temple Street in Chandni Chowk on Thursday.

Saha case hearing

The final hearing for the Anuradha Saha death case will be held at the National Consumers Disputes Redressal Commission, in New Delhi, on March 26.

Medical seats

Counselling for admission to the postgraduate degree and diploma courses in surgery and medicine of the West Bengal University of Health Sciences would be held on April 15 and 16, vice-chancellor M.M. Chowdhury said on Thursday.

Shop gutted

A shop of wooden materials in Khardah was gutted on Wednesday night. No casualties were reported.

New members

The government has nominated two new members, A. Shukrana Mondal and Kalyan Chowdhuri, to the West Bengal Minorities’ Commission, according to a press release. The commission now has 13 members.
