Woman found dead, companion missing

A 28-year-old woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the Burtola area on Sunday afternoon. Her body was recovered from a rented house on Durga Charan Mitra Street. During investigation, the local police came to know that the victim, Joyita Shau, had moved into the house with a man in his early 30s four days ago. The man was missing when the body was found. Police said the duo had claimed to be newly married when they took the house on rent. The man had told his landlord that he would be joining a private firm in a few days.

Blooms put on London flight

The first contingent of roses and tuberoses from the state was flown to London on Sunday morning. State horticulture corporation officials said about 550 kg of flowers were sent on a British Airways flight.

Power snag

A high-tension feeder line of the CESC tripped at 7.15 pm on Prinsep Street. Power supply to SN Banerjee Road, AJC Bose Road, Shakespeare Sarani, Chowringhee and other areas was hit, officials said. Some newspaper offices, including Ganashakti, were affected. CESC engineers are working to set the snag right.

Retired teachers

Retired primary and secondary schoolteachers of South 24-Parganas, at the third annual meet of their association at Baruipur on Sunday, demanded immediate disbursement of gratuity and commuted value of pension. Association president Biren Mishra said the government had stopped paying gratuity to them from 1999 and about 1,000 teachers in South 24-Parganas are yet to receive their commuted pension.
