Rupesh Roy has it easy

Second seed Rupesh Roy entered the second round of both the singles and doubles at the ONGC ITF junior tennis championship at the Dakshin Kalikata Sansad here Tuesday.

In the singles he beat qualifier Manu Bajpai of Bangalore 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Rupesh then paired with Anshuman Dutta to beat Hungarian Botond Godry and Indian Rohan Gide 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to reach the doubles quarters. Shivika Burman reached the girls’ second round Monday. On Tuesday she also made it to the round of eight in the doubles, partnering Ukraine’s Iryna Matychyk to beat the Indian pair of Parija Maloo and Poojashree Venkatesh 6-4, 6-3.

Under-19 team

Sankha Roy Chowdhury will lead the state under-19 soccer squad of 20 to the 40th junior national meet for the Dr B.C. Roy Trophy to be held in Bokaro. Bengal will play from the preliminary stage and take on Sikkim in their first match February 1. Then they play Orissa (February 3) and Bihar (February 5).

Bengal eves 3rd

Bengal women finished third, while their men managed only a seventh spot in the 39th senior national kho-kho meet in Dhule, Maharashtra on January 24. In the third-place play-off match Bengal girls beat Andhra Pradesh 11-10. Punjab emerged champions while Maharashtra finished runners-up.

Junior soccer

North 24 Parganas junior football coaching school beat Kalitukri Sajib Sangha 3-0 to clinch the Kashinath Khan and Nandalal Ghosh Memorial Challenge Shield at the Howrah Abasar Sammilani ground.

Ordnance meet

The sixth all-India ordnance factories inter-zonal athletics meet will be held at the Metal Complex, Ishapore Thursday.
