Q: I have recently delivered a Caesarian baby. How long should I wait to exercise' Is it safe to exercise (as I am feeding the baby) and will this hamper the milk supply'
After a normal delivery, one can exercise after a month. After a Caesarian delivery, you can exercise after three months. Exercise is perfectly safe and will not affect the milk supply. Do wear a good support bra and instead of jogging, do a spot warm-up simultaneously lifting both hands upwards and raising alternate legs. This will prevent the breast muscles from sagging.
If a daily exercise programme is not possible, try at least an alternate, thrice-a-week exercise routine. Whenever time is available, spend 15 minutes doing abs without interruptions by the doorbell or telephone etc. The stomach area needs special attention and regular exercise to get back into shape.
Q: My 12-year-old son is overweight and complains of leg pains. He mostly watches TV and is not interested in games. How can I help him'
The leg pains can be due to his being overweight. Instead of playing games, encourage him to enrol in an aerobic class at least thrice weekly. If this does not appeal, then the gym may be the answer. The various machines for different parts of the body can help. Also, the motorised treadmill will give a good cardio workout and burn fat. Cut down on rice, colas, sweets and chocolates, ice creams, etc. Introduce interesting salads at meals. Try to get a friend or family member to join him in his regimen as a motivating factor.
Q: I have feet problems as both my big toes overlap my second toes and this causes lack of balance. What can I do to help me to walk comfortably without resorting to surgery, as suggested by an orthopaedic doctor'
Do try the toe dividers which are available at an orthopaedic outlet. Buy sandals. To specially order them would be a good idea — sandals which divide the big toe and hold it firmly in place with a separate section for the remaining toes. The toe dividers should be worn with the sandals. Buy two pairs to wash and wear.
