Ameeta eyes Congress

Amethi, Jan. 21 (PTI): The Congress in Uttar Pradesh today got a boost when BJP MLA from Amethi and former state minister Ameeta Singh came out in support for the party.

She said she was awaiting a signal from party chief Sonia Gandhi to join the Congress.

Ameeta, the wife of senior Congress leader Sanjay Singh from Amethi, said she found herself emotionally closer to the party ever since her husband returned to the party fold in August last year. But she was awaiting Sonia’s nod to join.

At a meeting in Munshiganj guest house, amid 500 supporters of Sanjay and in the presence of Priyanka Gandhi, Ameeta appealed to the people of Amethi to elect Sonia with a huge margin in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

“You had elected Soniaji as the MP from here but this time give her a resounding win to help her become the Prime Ministe of the country,” she said.

A minister of state in the BSP-BJP government led by Mayavati, Ameeta had been under pressure from the BJP to clarify her position since Sanjay returned to the Congress. She had till now denied any truck with the party saying she was a loyal BJP worker.
