Dulal Dey, the driver of finance minister Asim Dasgupta, was arrested for knocking down a 65-year-old woman on Beleghata Main Road on Tuesday. Dasgupta was not in the car when the accident occurred.

Dey was taken to Entally police station on Wednesday and later released on bail. The elderly woman, Bansia Devi, was admitted to NRS Hospital with “head injuries and multiple fractures of the right leg”.

Dasgupta went to the hospital soon after the accident and stated that the government would bear all medical expenses for Devi’s treatment.

According to an officer on the case, Dey lost control following axle trouble and rammed into the pedestrian.
