January 14 at Ramakrishna Vedanta Math; 7 pm: Swami Samshuddhananda, Dr Kshetra Prasad Sen Sharma and Dr Bhupendra Nath Seal will speak in Bengali on Life and Sayings of Swami Vivekananda.

January 16 at Bharati Tamil Sangham, 93A Rashbehari Avenue; 6 pm: Tamil Manram, Pongal Festivals with recitations of poems by Thiru D. Ganasekaran, Malaravan, Vijayalakshmi Venket, Chitra Krishnan on Pongalo Pongal, followed by Tamil Isai by Chelvi Purnima Venugopal, with Chelvi Pratibha Venugopal (harmonium) and Biswajit (tabla). Ludiana Krishnamurthy will render folk songs from MGR films.

BOOK launch

January 14 at Oxford Bookstore; 6.30 pm: Oxford Bookstore and Penguin Books India jointly host the city launch of Beyond the Courtyard A Sequel to Unveiling India by Anees Jung, followed by an interaction with the author.

January 14 - 27 at Sasha, 27, Mirza Ghalib Street: Weaving Spells & Spinning Dreams — an exhibition of silk products. January 15 - 17 at Kanishka, 2/1 Hindustan Road; 10.30 am - 8 pm: An exhibition of tussar weaves from the looms of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa and West Bengal.

Birth anniversary

January 14 at Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math, Howrah; 4.45 am onwards: The 142nd birthday of Swami Vivekananda will be celebrated beginning with Mangalaarati, chanting of Vedic mantras, devotional songs, reading from Chandi, recitation from Kathopanishad and discussion on The Life and Teachings of Swami Vivekananda at pm. Participants: Swami Swahananda (English) and Dr Sachchidananda Dhar (Bengali) January 14 at Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission, Barrackpore; 8 am: Day-long birthday Tithi puja of Swami Vivekananda including Balak Narayan puja, Havanam, Bhajans, recitation from Kathao-panishad followed by discourses on the life and teaching of Swamiji by Dr Sujit Basu, VC, Visva Bharati. Also cultural programme at 3 pm.
